Can You Take the CELPIP Test Online or From Home?

This is one of the questions we get asked the most, usually from people hoping to avoid traveling to a test centre. The honest answer is short, but it's worth explaining clearly so you don't plan around the wrong assumption.

The standard answer: no, not from home

The regular CELPIP - General and CELPIP - General LS tests are computer-delivered, but they still have to be completed in person at an authorized test centre. Registration and payment happen online, and the test itself is taken on a computer, but that computer is at a physical, authorized location, supervised, with identity checks and standard exam conditions.

If a service or third party offers to let you take the "real" CELPIP fully remotely and unsupervised, that's not the official test, and results from it won't be accepted by IRCC or any institution that requires genuine CELPIP scores.

The one real exception: CELPIP at Home

CELPIP has piloted a limited CELPIP at Home option that allows remote testing under specific conditions. It's worth being clear about what "limited" means here: availability is restricted, eligibility requirements are strict, and it involves its own technical and identity-verification setup (a compatible device, stable connection, a proper testing environment, and remote proctoring). It is not a general substitute for the in-person test, and it isn't guaranteed to be available in every country or for every applicant.

Why the in-person requirement exists

Immigration-grade English tests carry real weight, since a score directly affects PR, citizenship, and work eligibility decisions. In-person testing at an authorized centre is what lets IRCC and other institutions trust that the person who took the test is the person whose name is on the score report, under conditions nobody can quietly work around. That's the same reason CELPIP restricts things like single-listen audio and supervised recording during Speaking: the format is designed so the result reflects your actual ability, not a workaround.

What you can do remotely

While the test itself needs a physical centre, your entire preparation doesn't have to.
