How Many Times Can You Retake the CELPIP? (And What It Really Costs)

If your first CELPIP attempt doesn't come back with the score you needed, the good news is that there's no cap on how many times you can retake it. The less good news is that each attempt costs real money and real time, and understanding the actual rules helps you decide whether to retake immediately, wait, or apply for something cheaper first.

There's no retake limit, but there is a spacing rule

CELPIP doesn't set a maximum number of attempts. According to CELPIP's own policies, you simply can't register for more than one test session within any 5 calendar day period. In practice, this stops people from booking back-to-back sessions hoping one sticks, and pushes you toward actually addressing whatever held your score back before you try again.

Re-evaluation is often cheaper than a full retake

Before booking a brand new sitting, it's worth knowing that CELPIP offers a re-evaluation option. Per the official policies page, you can request a re-evaluation of some or all components within 6 months of your original test date, for a fee. If your Speaking or Writing score actually goes up after re-evaluation, the fee you paid for those specific components gets refunded.

This only makes sense if you genuinely believe your response was under-scored, not as a way to guess your way to a higher band, but it's a real, cheaper option worth knowing about before you default to a full retake.

What the test actually costs

As of the fee update noted on CELPIP's fee change announcement, the CELPIP-General Test costs CAD 290 (plus tax) for sittings in Canada. Fees for international test centres vary by country, so check the specific location page for your test centre before assuming the Canadian price applies to you.

Do the math on retaking twice because your Speaking came in one band short each time, and you're not looking at a small expense. Compare that to the cost of a genuinely realistic mock exam with real feedback before you ever book the real thing, and the retake starts looking like the expensive option, not the safe one.
